I regularly suggest additional mulching to all my clients. The importance of this is never more apparent than in a very warm summer such as we're enjoying, and it's not too late to do this. In fact, leaf mould from last autumn is likely now ready for use and is ideal for this purpose. Why the obsession with mulching? Well, most importantly for plants it conserves the soil moisture, regulates soil temperature and keeps their roots cool. But it also supresses weeds and it adds valuable nutrients, so improving the health of the soil. Adding organic matter to your soil is always the best single thing you can do to benefit the myriad of soil organisms and your plants. So, hoe off surface weeds and hand-weed where needed to remove any of the longer tap roots. Make sure the soil is damp - the recent rain has made conditions ideal now - never mulch dry soil. Apply a generous layer, at least 10cm deep. Mulch to the radius of any particular shrub canopy and make sure to leave space around the trunk/stems, it shouldn't be touching. How much smarter does that look? Another benefit!
