September is probably one of the most useful months in the garden. So, here's what I'll be doing.... now we've had some decent rain it's good not to let the weeds get away from you and whilst you're in the borders give dahlias, salvias and cosmos particularly some serious attention deadheading as they will continue flowering for a good while yet. September is about editing the borders too - taking away some of the dried out material, fallen or ugly looking brown stems whilst leaving any attractive seedheads along with your grasses for winter structure and shelter for wildlife. Keep anything which earns it's place, remove the rest. Then the best part - take cuttings - especially salvias and pelargoniums and start to divide early-flowering perennials, remembering to leave dividing grasses till spring. Finally - now the ground has moisture again it's a great time for planting and filling gaps having held back all summer. Anything going in now - especially new shrubs - will have the time necessary to establish their roots in warm soil before winter. So, get to your favourite nursery!
