This is a great month for new planting, and this year having held back because of the incredibly dry summer it's a good time to get new container grown trees, shrubs and perennials in the ground. The soil is warm and now (finally!) it is moist too which means the roots will establish quickly ahead of winter. Focus on late-flowering perennials particularly - Rudbeckia, Echinacea, Aster/Symphyotrichum, Sedum, Japanese Anemone, Vernonia, Eupatorium etc. However, leave planting out new Salvias until next spring, as if we have a wet autumn their roots may rot and most likely they will not survive the winter. You can pot them on into larger pots if needed and keep in a cold-frame, and of course now is the ideal time to take some cuttings as your insurance policy or to increase your stock. Do remember that established Salvias that have survived the winter should not be trimmed back and tidied until late spring, when the new growth has started and the risk of frosts has passed.
