NOVEMBER - VEGETABLE GARDEN

If you're looking to plant garlic it needs to be in the ground as soon as possible now and definitely by the end of the month. It's also a good time to propagate rhubarb - lift a large root and split it into smaller pieces but ensuring that each division has at least one bud on it. Add organic matter and plant each new division 75-90cam apart. It's time to start harvesting sprouts - the largest form from the bottom up so start picking from the bottom. If plants are tall now is the time to stake to prevent them from blowing over in high winds. It's also a great time to plant new soft fruit bushes, bare root. Blackcurrants are an exception to the normal rules of planting (i.e. at the same depth before they were lifted) in that they should be set lower in the planting hole with 8-10cm of the stem below ground level which encourages new growth from the base. Prune the new plants to around 10cm high to encourage good, strong fruiting growth in the spring.
